Figure work is some of the most satisfying. Whether working with a model and weaving her personality into the pose and piece, or bringing a dancer or emotion to life through sculpture, figures have been central to my work for decades.

Bust // Animals
I created my first dog bust in 1999. Soon, many people began asking for portraits of their animals. As I studied the shapes, coats, breed standards, and variations of hundreds of different dog breeds, I began to practice by creating busts from photographs and measurements. Many of my finished studies on dog breeds are available for purchase here.

Sometimes clay is just clay. Working in the abstract helps remind me that clay should not try to recreate living things. Clay provides an impression of a person or animal, captures a memory in a way unique to its medium. Abstract work is an exercise in appreciating what clay can do, and what it cannot do.
Girl on Top [Ceramic]

Using sculpture to tell a story or capture a moment is becoming more central to my work. As I find clients who want to capture their own memories, a storytelling piece comes to life. Additionally, I create small works as maquette (miniature) to guide my work when producing large commissions.
